Editorial Emendations

These notes record all editorial emendations in the present text to the first edition of Malcolm's Katie: A Love Story. Each entry records the reading of the present text before the "]" and the reading of the first edition after the "]". Thus "II, 62 mists: ] mists" indicates that in Part II, line 62 a semicolon has been added after "mists" where there is none in the first edition. Where necessary, the notes also record the authority and/or earlier precedent(s) for a given emendation, either in the manuscript fragments of Malcolm's Katie in the Queen's University Archives (see Appendix A) or in the important editions of the poem by John Garvin in The Collected Poems of Isabella Valancy Crawford (1905: rpt. 1972), pp. 193-236 and David Sinclair in Nineteenth-Century Narrative Poems (1972), pp. 158-190.  For example, "I, 41 unfoldment feebly ] unfoldment— feebly (MS.; Garvin; Sinclair)" indicates that the editorial change recorded has been made on the authority of the manuscript and the precedent of Garvin and Sinclair.

V, 6

Now ] How (Garvin). This is an especially contentious emendation, for, while Garvin substitutes "Now" for "How" (see Appendix B), Sinclair changes the "mist. How" of the first edition to "mist; how". Nor does the manuscript (Fragment 6; see Appendix A) offer an easy solution to the problem: it shows a clear period after "mist", but the opening letter of the next word could be either a poorly formed "H" or an "N" with a slight slip of the pen. Obviously, the balance has tipped towards the latter reading in the present text.
