Appendix B
J.W. Garvin's Emendations to Malcolm's Katie
As a result of emendations made by J.W. Garvin (see Introduction,
pp. xi-xii), the version of Malcolm's Katie contained in The Collected Poems (Toronto;
Briggs, 1905) and reproduced in the Literature of Canada: Poetry and Prose in Reprint
series differs in a variety of ways from the version of the poem that appears in Old
Spookses' Pass, Malcolm's Katie, and Other Poems. The purpose of
this Appendix is to list the substantial changes made by Garvin in his edition—that
is, the verbal and other alterations that affect the meaning of the poem. Minor changes in
spelling and punctuation (the main area of intervention by Garvin) are not recorded here,
but may be obtained by sending a self-addressed envelope to the Centre for Canadian
Poetry, Department of English, University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, N6A-3K7. In
the following entries, the reading in the first edition appears before the "I",
and the reading in Garvin appears after the "]". For example, the entry
"II, 56 deep, tranied ] deep-crannied" indicates that where the first edition
has "deep, tranied" Garvin has substituted "deep-crannied".
