Emendations

These notes record all the emendations in the present edition to the copy-text, the 1842 edition of Tecumseh. In each entry the reading of the present text is given before a square bracket, and the reading of the copy-text after the bracket, followed by the source of the present reading in parentheses. The use of (1828) after the entry indicates that the emendation follows the 1828 edition, and the notation (Eds.) indicates editorial changes based on precedents elsewhere in the text. Entries are keyed to the line numbers in each canto. Thus, in the first entry, "fiends] friends (1828)" indicates that in line five of the first canto in the present text "friends" has been emended to "fiends" and that this emendation has been made on the authority of the 1828 edition.
