TO MISS CRUDEN.



FRIEND of my childhood! still unchanged and kind!
Thine be the inscriptive lay—Oh! justly thine—
Who, with more fondness, thro’ the unfolding mind,
Watch’d the gay beam of sportive Fancy shine?

Who, when the world, with promised pleasure crown’d,

Glow’d on the eager gaze of op’ning youth,
Wishful to warn—reluctant still to wound,
Half told its folly—half unveil’d the truth?
